The Three Easter Motets set to music, for a cappella SATB choir, three remarkable Latin texts well suited to the calm, inward joy of the Paschal season.

The third motet sets a medieval Gallican prayer that captivated my imagination when I first came across it in Dom Guéranger’s Liturgical Year. It is suitable not only for Paschaltide but for general use, as the text speaks about the Holy Eucharist as the Lamb offered in sacrifice.

Ipsum solum adoremus, alleluia, alleluia.
Ipsum glorificemus, cum angelis clamantes:
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.
Venite populi ad sacrum et immortale mysterium et libamen agendum.
Cum timore et fide accedamus, quoniam propter
nos Agnus Dei Patris sacrificium propositum est,
alleluia, alleluia.
Ipsum solum adoremus, alleluia, alleluia.
Ipsum glorificemus, cum angelis clamantes:
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

TRANSLATION

Him alone let us adore, alleluia, alleluia,
Him let us glorify, crying out with the angels:
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.
Come, O ye people, to enact the sacred and immortal mystery
and libation!
Let us approach with fear and faith, because it was for our sake
that the Lamb of God the Father was offered in sacrifice,
alleluia, alleluia.
Him alone let us adore, alleluia, alleluia,
Him let us glorify, crying out with the angels:
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.
