Seized with delight by this mystical poem by Angelus Silesius (1624-1677), I decided to set it to music for SATB choir. The piece, in English, would serve well on any Marian feast or for a general motet.

1. Thee, O Mary, will I praise,
Love and serve thee all my days.
O thou clearest Morning Star,
I will sing thee near and far;
For through thee to us was giv’n
Jesus, Lord of earth and heav’n!
Thee, O Mary, will I praise,
Love and serve thee all my days!

2. Like the dazzling sun at morn,
Light and splendor thee adorn;
Or as moon and stars endure,
Gentle, holy, chaste, and pure.
Yet art thou a host, we know,
To protect us from the foe.
Thee, O Mary, will I praise,
Love and serve thee all my days!

3. Radiant chariot of gold,
Bearing us into the fold;
Of true Solomon the throne,
Fleece of Gideon, peerless one;
Chosen vessel of the Lord,
Dwelling of th’Almighty Word.
O thou brightest Morning Star,
I will sing thee near and far.

(Angelus Silesius, 1624–1677, trans. Mary E. Mannix)
