During the ceremonial washing of men's feet on Holy Thursday, the choir or schola is instructed to sing several or all of the seven antiphons appointed in the Graduale Romanum (Solesmes ed., 1974, pp. 164–67) or a vernacular equivalent. Although the order of the seven antiphons displays a certain logic, there is no fixed number that must be sung or order in which they must be sung, and any antiphon may be repeated ad libitum.

In 2010, I set to music seven "Mandatum Antiphons" for SATB a cappella chorus, using the English text of The Plainchant Gradual, adapted by the Rev. G. H. Palmer and Francis Burgess, 2nd ed., rev. (Wantage: St. Mary’s Press, 1965; repr. by the Church Music Association of America, n.d.), pp. 125–28.

If a concert performance is envisioned, all of the antiphons should be sung, with all their parts and in their proper order.

The antiphons are available either separately or as a set.

Antiphon I
(cf. John 13, vv. 4, 5, 15; Psalm 48:1)

AFTER THE LORD had risen from supper, he put water in a basin, and began to wash the feet of his disciples: this example left he unto them. Psalm. Great is the Lord, and highly to be praised: in the city of our God, even upon his holy hill. Antiphon.

Antiphon II
(John 13, vv. 12, 13, 15)

THE LORD JESUS, after he had supped with his disciples, and had washed their feet, said unto them: Know ye what I, your Lord and Master, have done unto you? I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done unto you.

Antiphon III
(John 13, vv. 6, 7, 8)

LORD, dost thou wash my feet? Jesus answered and said: If I wash not thy feet, thou hast no part in me.
He came therefore unto Simon Peter, and Peter said unto him: Lord, dost thou wash my feet? Jesus answered and said: If I wash not thy feet, thou hast no part in me.
What I do, thou knowest not now: but thou shalt know hereafter. Lord, dost thou wash my feet? Jesus answered and said: If I wash not thy feet, thou hast no part in me.

Antiphon IV
(cf. John 13, v. 14; Psalm 49:1)

IF I, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet: how much more ought ye to wash the feet of one another? Psalm. O hear ye this, all ye people: ponder it with your ears, all ye that dwell in the world. Antiphon.

Antiphon V
(John 13, v. 35)

BY THIS shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye love one another. Jesus said unto his disciples: By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye love one another.

Antiphon VI
(John 13, v. 34; Psalm 119:1)

A NEW COMMANDMENT give I unto you: that ye love one another, as I have loved you, saith the Lord.
Psalm. Blessed are those that are undefiled in the way: and walk in the law of the Lord. Antiphon.

Antiphon VII
(1 Corinthians 13:13)

LET THERE ABIDE in you faith, hope, and charity, these three: but the greatest of these is charity. Now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three: but the greatest of these is charity.
